Soldiers get to see the worst kind of gore and experience the worst kind of brutality that man can carry out against others of his very own kind and these experiences leave everlasting scars & scabs. The memories are so overwhelming that either an ex soldier goes in to a state of long lasting isolation or he or she become very vocal about the experiences; more that often opting to inscribe the occurrence & the incidents.

Philip Caputo has clearly stated in the foreword that his inscription is not meant to serve as either a historical account or as a platform to be used towards accusing other people & entities involved in the Vietnam War. Rather the sole purpose of Philip Caputo’s Rumor of War is to narrate the experiences he lived through personally and the things that he got to witness first hand. The inscription of A Rumor of War is divided into 3 parts:

  1. The Splendid Little War
  2. The Officer in Charge of the Dead
  3. In Death’s Grey Land

The first part talks about his experiences as a trainee officer, being the first ones to be deployed to Vietnam and initial sentiments about the Vietnam War. The following section pertains to him being assigned to carry out a desk job where he must keep count and maintain records for his deceased comrades and the attitude of the senior officers towards the conflict at hand. The last section relates to his reassignment as the leader of a rifle company and how he was almost court-marshaled because of his subordinates.

Analysis of Philip Caputo's A Rumor of War

A Rumor of War by Philip Caputo, is an exceptional autobiography on a man's first-hand experiences during the Vietnam War. Philip Caputo is a Lieutenant during the Vietnam War and illustrates the harsh reality of what war really is. Caputo's in-depth details of his experience during the war are enough to make one cringe, and the eventual mental despair often experienced by soldiers (including Caputo) really makes you feel for participants taking part in this dreadful war atmosphere. The psychological hit on him from the killing of these young American Men by the Viet Cong was one of great measure, as his lack of mental stability and his extreme hate for the Viet Cong lead to the eventual downward spiral of his career.

Overall, the United States should have never taken part in the Vietnam War. We lost many heroic men in this war and really didn't gain a single thing as a result. The United States aims in Vietnam were meant to be a defensive campaign, but eventually turned very offensive indeed. Running around a jungle and continually losing men because of booby traps is completely ridiculous. The United States should have stayed out of this war from the beginning and let the Vietnamese fight there own war. Caputo's frame of reference is beyond reliable as he documents a first-hand experience in the Vietnam War with great detail. The Rumor of War is an excellent book that really helps capture the true essence of the Vietnam war and as stated by Caputo, "This book does not pretend to be history" (xiii). What Caputo means by this is that history books only cover a small part of what the Vietnam War was all about; his book leaves nothing out and captures the reader with the true reality of what really happens in the war atmosphere.
